Sound City: Real to Reel at THE LODGE!

Dave Grohl's debut film Sound City: Real to Reel has garnered major accolades and even Oscar whispers around the globe. The soundtrack for this amazing rockumentary, which includes the first ever reunion of the remaining members of Nirvana joined by Paul McCartney, was mastered by Chief Mastering Engineer Emily Lazar, and her team at THE LODGE.

The film conceived by Grohl features interviews and performances from famous musicians and producers who recorded some of rock’s greatest albums on the Neve 8028 and in the magical space of Sound City Studios located in the Van Nuys section of Los Angeles, California during its 42 year history from 1969- 2011.
Instead of reminiscing about yet another monumental studio biting the dust, Grohl in his usual upbeat Renaissance man fashion decided to celebrate the studio's amazing history and give the legendary Sound City Studios the proper credit it deserves. The iconic albums that were recorded at Sound City will make your head spin including Nirvana's "Nevermind", Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", Neil Young’s "After The Gold Rush", Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' "Damn The Torpedoes", Rage Against The Machine's "Rage Against The Machine" and Cheap Trick's "Heaven Tonight" the list goes on and on.
Grohl tracked down and joined forces with the famous artists that walked through Sound City’s doors to discuss the studio's legacy and collaborate on an all-star studded compilation album. Released on Roswell Records Sound City: Real to Reel is a brand new collection of all-original songs, each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film soundtrack on the Neve 8028 after it was reinstalled in Grohl’s Studio 606. The new mega jam-packed compilation album—produced by Butch Vig, mixed by James Brown and Chris Lord-Alge features some serious heavy hitters and totally amazing collaborations between Grohl and Stevie NicksPaul McCartneyKrist NovoselicPat SmearTaylor HawkinsRami JaffeeRick SpringfieldJoshua HommeRick NielsenLee VingCorey TaylorBrad WilkTim CommerfordJessy GreeneJim KeltnerAlain JohannesChris GossRick NielsonScott ReederNate MendelPeter HayesRobert Levon Been and Trent Reznor. The story of Sound City will inspire generations to come as we move forward further into the era of digital recording. Good timeless music never dies though, you can purchase a vinyl copy of Sound City: Real to Reel at Amazon or download to-go at iTunes.

Foo Fighters Album Mastered by Emily Lazar & Joe LaPorta at The Lodge Leads This Year's Grammy Nominations

The nominations for this year’s 54th Annual Grammy Awards were just announced and legendary rockers Foo Fighters' "Wasting Light" album scooped up a total of SIX nominations including: Album Of The Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance for “Walk,” Best Hard Rock Performance for “White Limo” and Best Long Form Music Video for “Back and Forth.”   Butch Vig, producer for "Wasting Light,"is also nominated for Producer of The Year.

Mastered by Emily Lazar and Joe LaPorta at The Lodge earlier this year, “Wasting Light” (RCA Records/Roswell Records) charted at #1 across twelve countries marking this album as the band's first ever #1 record since their formation in 1994.  It was also certified gold immediately after it's release.

An all-analog production, "Wasting Light" is a truly brilliant record that captures Foo Fighters at their rawest and tightest as a band.  This is thanks to Dave Grohl's insistence not to use a single computer throughout the whole record making process.  The album was tracked by James Brown using a 24 track Studer A827 and an API 1608 console in Grohl's garage and eventually mixed by Alan Moulder in the same garage!  The final mixes were transfered to 1/2" tape and mastered through an entirely analog signal chain at The Lodge.

From everyone at The Lodge, we wish to send our most heartfelt congratulations to Foo Fighters, producer Butch Vig and engineers Alan Moulder and James Brown. We are all extremely excited about this nomination, not only is it a milestone for rock music but it's also a great achievement for women in audio as Emily Lazar is the first female mastering engineer to be nominated in the Album Of The Year category.

And if you haven't seen it, here's Foo Fighters' video for “Walk” nominated for Best Rock Song.

Foo Fighters Top Billboard Charts in 12 Countries!

The Lodge crew is celebrating yet another #1 record as Foo Fighters' latest, "Wasting Light," clocked in at #1 on the US Billboard Top 100 Albums chart this week!  The album, mastered by Emily Lazar and Joe LaPorta, is now #1 in 12 countries!

In their nearly two decades as a band, "Wasting Light" is, surprisingly, the first Foo Fighters album to ever reach #1! The Lodge is incredibly excited to share this moment with the band as well as with our old friends, producer-extraordinaire Butch Vig (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana), engineer James Brown (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Nine Inch Nails) and mix engineer Alan Moulder (Against Me!, The Killers). Last week, "Wasting Light" sold 235,000 copies-- toppling sales for Adele's popular album "21"-- and the first single from the album "Rope," is going on it's sixth week at #1 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart.

Check out Foo's video for "Rope" on their website here and if you haven't already picked up a copy of "Wasting Light," go get it now! This is an album you don't want to miss out on!

(Pictured from left to right): Top Row: Joe LaPorta, Butch Vig, Pat Smear, James Brown, Chris Shiflett, Taylor Hawkins. Bottom Row: Nate Mendel, Emily Lazar, Dave Grohl.

2011 is here and the champagne is still flowing as The Foo Fighters toast the completion of their 7th studio album at The Lodge.  The band attended the session with legendary producer Butch Vig & engineer James Brown.

Co-mastered by Chief Mastering Engineer Emily Lazar and Mastering Engineer Joe LaPorta, the new album is heralded as their heaviest album to date.  It also marks Grohl and Vig's first reunion since Nirvana's "Nevermind" in 1991.  Recorded & mixed entirely to analog tape, the album features guest appearances by Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü and reunites Grohl with the remaining Nirvana band members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. In an interview with MTV news posted online yesterday, Dave Grohl explained, "There's 11 songs and, front to back, there's not one sleepy ballad. The fact that we did it without any computers, it was just really simple. It just sounds massive."

Dave Grohl tweeted & revealed to his fans a 10 sec video snippet of the track "White Limo" (click here)-- and check out The Lodge's oscilloscope rockin' out to the onslaught!

NMEBillboard and Spin magazines also posted articles announcing the completion of the album.

Bear Hands "Burning Bush Supper Club" Mastered At The Lodge!

Popular in the experimental pop scene, Brooklyn's Bear Hands are set to release their new full length studio album, Burning Bush Supper Club, on November 2, 2010 via Cantora Records. The album was mastered at The Lodge by Mastering Engineer Joe LaPorta.

Formed in Brooklyn by a group of college friends in 2006, Bear Hands have hit the indie scene with a splash since they began touring a few years ago. Burning Bush Supper Club will mark their first full length effort since releasing an EP in 2007. James Brown (Foo Fighters), the album's engineer, stopped by The Lodge late this summer to work with mastering engineer Joe LaPorta, after spending months crafting the album with producer Chuck Brody (Lykke Li, Santigold). Much like the work of their Brooklyn contemporaries, Bear Hands have traces of many eclectic influences in their music. From psych-rock sounding songs to brightly upbeat pop anthems with booming drums, Bear Hands has a little something for everyone. They also recently headlined the Lodge-sponsored CMJ showcase at NYC's bowling alley/venue, the Brooklyn Bowl in October!

Bear Hands have been touring relentlessly since the summer, and are gearing up for even more dates with their friends and pop-rock giants MGMT this fall and winter. Come out and see these road warriors at a venue near you.
